BIOGRAPHY:
Cana Gürmen started her piano education at an early age at Istanbul State Conservatory with Prof. Statzer and continued her piano studies with Prof. Yapalı. She attended Prof. Sholz, Prof. Zecchi and Prof. Engel’s classes at Mozarteum Music Academy at Salzburg and made perfection studies with Prof. Margulis and Prof. Zaritzkaya.
She received her graduate degree with high honors at Ankara State Conservatory, Piano Department in 1977 and started teaching at Istanbul University State Conservatory. In the meantime, she began her career as a soloist and performed with many orchestras in Turkey and abroad, such as Germany, Cyprus, France, Belgium, Austria, Jordan, Bulgaria, Moldova, Georgia, Serbia, Ukraine, Macedonia, Italy, Sicily and Kosovo and appeared in many radio and television programs. In addition to her academic career, she was also invited to national and international competitions as a jury member.
Along with her international performances, Gürmen has worked with remarkable artists and received good critiques within her country. Her vast repertory brought her together with the most prominent artists of her country, she had the opportunity to work with the celebrated violinists Saim Akçıl, State artist Suna Kan ,Cihat Aşkın and the State opera singer (bass) Ayhan Baran. As a piano-violin duo, Suna Kan and Cana Gürmen played in many concert halls and festivals throughout Turkey, including International Istanbul and Ankara Music Festivals for twenty years. Apart from the local and international festivals they attended, Kan and Gürmen has been performing together locally and throughout the country in order to serve for the spreading of classical music in Turkey.
In 1999, Cana Gürmen was given the title of Professorship in Istanbul University State Conservatory. In 2009, she received the prestigious annual Gold Medal Award by the Kennedy Center International Committee on the Arts.
Gürmen is among the most sought after pianists with her exeptional control ,unique texture and sound quality.She focusses to chamber music and gave many concerts with world leading musicians like the violinist L. Chilingirian, Ryu Goto, and T. Papavrami. and also helping young talents to pave their ways. She started the ”Chamber Music with Future Stars” project in 2012 and continues to experience the pleasure of discovering young stars of the future. Having founded the Kartal Art Academy, Gürmen continues to contribute to the development of classical music through giving master classes in different institutions.
